Recommend A… Book That Made You Emotional

Recommend A... is hosted by Chick Loves Lit and every week there is a prompt for different book recommendations!

This week's prompt is:
Recommend A… Book That Made You Emotional

by Jojo Moyes

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time.

It's so easy for me to find a book that makes  smile inwardly when I read certain lines. Or even burst out laughing. Books that make me tear up/cry on the other hand are rare. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes is one of those and it caught me completely off guard. I went into the book expecting a light hearted and romantic read (look at the cover! doesn't it seem like a chick lit?) and that was not what I got. The beginning was rather slow and I actually put it down a few times. When I really got into it however, I was gripped and it made me stay up till wee hours in the morning. By the time I finished, my pillow was wet with tears.

Me Before You is one my all time favorite reads and one of the best books I've read in 2012. I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for something realistic and a story that you can be emotionally invested in.

Waiting on Wednesday #2

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

------------------------------------------------

Expected publication: August 28th 2012

Mysterious lights have flickered above Crownsville for as long as Mia can remember. And as far as she’s concerned, that’s about the only interesting thing to happen in her small town.

That is, until Sol arrives. Mia’s not one to fall for just any guy, but she can’t get intense Sol—or the brilliant tattoo on his back—out of her mind.

Then Mia’s brother goes missing, and Mia’s convinced that Sol knows more than he’s sharing. But getting closer to Sol means reevaluating everything she once believed to be true. Because Sol’s not who Mia thought he was—and neither is she. - cover & summary from Goodreads

------------------------------------------------

I was surprised when I found out The Dark Light  was a YA title. Thought it was a paranormal/urban fantasy book when I first saw the cover. Nonetheless, the summary is intriguing and I can't wait for it to be released! :)

Cover Story

I came across the book cover for Project Moses by Robert B. Lowe today.

It immediately reminded me of the cover for Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

It's amazing how same image can look and give off such a different feeling with just a different color. What do you think?

So I discovered this last night...

While stalking the status of my copy of Shadow and Bone yet again (it's still under 'processing' D: ), I took a peek at my order history at Book Depository.

To my surprise, I discovered the UK version of Throne of Glass was on my list of pre-orders...

Instead of this, the US one...

I ordered the paperback about a month ago and back then it had the US cover up. I have mixed feelings about this. They had not revealed the UK cover when I made my purchase so I didn't have a choice back then. I really like both covers, the UK being so badass and assassin-y (look at that outfit, the swords and the expression on her face!) and the US one is so pretty (I love the background!) and the model is just how I pictured Celaena.

What's bought is bought I guess but this is one of the times I really can't choose between the covers. >.<
I've seen so many promising reviews of the ARC and I like  the novellas so this is one of my most anticipated reads!

[Book Review] Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This book showed up in my ‘Readers Also Enjoyed’ panel in GoodReads. I forgot which book I was looking at that time but the cover for Obsidian (the old edition) caught my eye and I clicked onto it. (Yes I’ll admit that it was the guy on the cover that attracted me! Even in a tiny thumbnail form. :P)

They are not like us…

Up close, I saw the blurb on the cover. Hmm. Okay. Yet another YA paranormal book eh? Angels? Vampires? Shapeshifters?

It turned out to be none of the above. To my surprise, it was about aliens . I’ve never read a YA book about aliens before…unless you count those Roswell TV tie-ins from all those years ago.

The story is told from the main character, Katy’s POV and we already know that the main guy a.k.a. Daemon is an alien from the summary. So I was curious to see how the author would ‘lead’ Katy to the discovery. I was afraid it would be one of those stories that make me cringe and want to face palm a lot (think obvious and very in your face clues, super unobservant heroines and dropping tons of huge hints until the MC finally gets it). Thankfully, this wasn’t one of the cases. The pacing of the story is just nice, not too rushed/slow and keeps you interested.

Katy is a likable character. She tough, brave and doesn’t fall for the jerk attitude Daemon sports. She’s a book blogger too! The thoughts that run in her head make me really want to laugh out loud. Some of my favorite lines:

“My palms itched to have a close encounter of the bitch-slap kind with his face.”

“The day my internet was hooked up was better than having a hot guy check out my butt and ask for my phone number.”

Daemon on the other hand didn’t endear himself to me…initially. The words from the summary describe him perfectly: Infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. I agree! He was such a rude jerk when Katy first went over to ask for directions and remained a jerk for some time. But as the story goes on, we get to see the other side of him, get to know him better and understand the reasons behind his attitude. It's safe to say I was a Daemon fan-girl by the end of the book. I love the banter/love-hate relationship between Katy and Daemon!

Dee, Daemon’s sister is lovable and rather…hyper. Her bubbly attitude dazes me a little (all that bouncy energy!) but she’s not without her share of problems as well. She’s a great friend to Katy and Daemon is fiercely protective of her.

The other characters in this book were interesting but aren’t really memorable. There’s the ex-girlfriend, one of the triplets who is nice/a little detached and other Luxen not too happy about their secret being revealed. The DoD (Department of Defense) is still pretty mysterious at this stage and I hope to know more about them in the coming books.

Rating: 4 of 5 stars.
